Start Your Day the Right Way
Will consciously starting your day make a difference to your life? Does it really matter how you start your morning? Is it possible to change your mindset by making some simple changes to your morning routine?
The answer to all of these questions is YES.
How It Used To Be…
I used to start my day mindlessly by waking up and heading for the kettle, pouring coffee and with a bit of a moan and a groan I would get dressed and head out to face the world.
Even reading that makes me feel sad and pretty unmotivated. Since changing my lifestyle, getting sober and living a medication free life I don’t wake up and hope that I’ll have a good day instead I wake up and give myself the best chance of having a great day.
Your word is your wand and your habits dictate your life and yes, in turn, your happiness. I start my day with intention by meditating, eating well, hydrating, moving my body with some stretches, writing in my gratitude diary and even sometimes having a disco (more about that later). My morning routine can take anywhere from 15 minutes to 40 depending on how much time I have.
As everyone is different what works for one will not work for another so you need to see what works for you. However, studies have shown that our day can be dictated by what we hear in the first 20 minutes after waking up which is why I wake up and set an intention like
“Everything is always working out for me”
“Today is a great day and I’m so grateful for the blessings that come my way”
“I choose to be happy today and I love my life”
“I am excited about today”
You can choose any affirmation that raises your vibration and makes you feel good.
Starting Your Morning.
Personally, I like to ease into my day by sitting at the side of the bed after waking and going through my stretching routine alongside my affirmation before even standing up. This ensures I stand up with a smile on my face. Here are some other ideas for getting your day off to a great start:
- Have a disco: Discos are a great way to boost your mood and get you out of a funk. I have a six-year-old and if there’s moaning and groaning in the morning we have a quick disco. He gets to choose the song and we let out hair down. My top tip is always: When in doubt don’t give out and have a disco!
- Hydrate: After brushing your teeth go straight for the water. Personally, I either have warm lemon water or lemon, ACV (apple cider vinegar) and water or then wait for 30 minutes before eating. This helps to stimulate digestions and rehydrate after a nights sleep. (If you are worried about the lemon and your teeth, use a straw)
- Stretching: For me stretching my body is really important. As I wake as it wakes up your muscles and gets your blood flowing and this energises you naturally.
- Practice gratitude: I have been writing in a gratitude diary for 6 years and it’s an integral part of my morning routine. It helps me to focus on the good things ensuring I see what I actually have and not what I don’t have. Write down 3 different things each day that you are grateful for and why.
- Don’t look at your phone straight away: Try and wake up, hydrate and stretch before looking at your phone. Very often we will read or see something that stresses us with work or on social media when we reach for the phone. Feed your mind, body, and spirit first before picking up your phone!
- Meditate: my morning meditation allows me to connect with myself before I head out to the chaos ensuring I am ready for anything that comes my way. My practice helps me to think more clearly, make better decisions. It gets my creative juices flowing and I have more patience.
- Make your bed: Studies have shown that simply making your bed can create inner calm which creates outer calm and a more organized frame of mind.
- Eat a healthy breakfast: Eating a Nutritious and energy fuelled breakfast really is the key to keeping your blood sugar and moods stabilized throughout the day. Porridge or eggs are always good choices. Steer clear of sugary, processed breakfast cereals
- Have your clothes organized: Do this from the night before, especially if you are a parent. This saves time and stress in the morning.
- Finally, SMILE!!! Scientists have found that by simply smiling on purpose can make you feel better.
